MUNICIPAL PROJECT
Analyzing J.T. Hinkle Park
Shield Engineering Group was selected by the City of Fort Worth to analyze the existing and proposed conditions at J.T. Hinkle Park. The park currently exists as a heavily-treed floodplain property and the conditions of the park property prevent further development of the space.
Shield prepared flood studies and evaluated detention requirements to reclaim a portion of the property from the existing drainage way with the goal of creating usable space for the park patrons and allow the development of the park. Shield was also tasked with implementing a master park plan that included park features such as picnic stations, playgrounds, hike/bike trails, a pavilion, pedestrian bridge, and security lighting.
Ensuring Minimal Impact
Design challenges that Shield successfully overcame on the project included grading of the creek to create space for a new playground, ensuring minimal impact to the existing floodplain and designing a stormdrain extension without causing negative erosion impacts. The extensive storm drain design made coordinating with the environmental subconsultant to delineate waters of the US and provide permitting options key to project success.
